ĐỆ NHẤT ĐÔ SOÁI THỦY QUÂN

Beneath the enemy warships

Yet Kieu (1242-1303), born Pham Huu The, was a celebrated naval warrior from Hai Duong and one of the five outstanding commanders serving under Hung Dao Vuong Tran Quoc Tuan. During the second and third resistance wars against the Mongol-Yuan forces, his extraordinary ability in the water enabled him to achieve major victories and earned him the title “Foremost Naval Commander of the Tran Dynasty.”

On nighttime missions, Yet Kieu secretly dived beneath enemy vessels, pierced their hulls, and temporarily sealed the openings with cloth plugs. At the appointed moment, he pulled the cords that removed the plugs, causing multiple warships to sink. This daring and inventive tactic made an important contribution to the Tran army's victories and shaped the enduring image of Yet Kieu moving fearlessly through turbulent waters.
