ĐẠI Y THIỀN SƯ
The physician who longed for home
Tue Tinh, born Nguyen Ba Tinh, was an outstanding physician of traditional Vietnamese medicine. Orphaned at a young age and raised in a pagoda, he passed the imperial examination but chose not to enter official service. Instead, he became a monk and devoted his life to medicine and healing. Guided by the principle “Southern medicine for Southern people,” Tue Tinh laid the foundations of Vietnamese medicine, established a network of pagoda clinics, compiled thousands of remedies, and became revered as the Saint of Southern Medicine.
As the Tran dynasty weakened, Tue Tinh was sent to the Ming court after it demanded that Dai Viet present a renowned physician. There, he cured the Ming Empress Dowager, received the title Great Physician Zen Master, and was retained at the Imperial Medical Institute. Although highly respected, he never ceased longing for his homeland. Unable to return to Dai Viet, he left a deeply moving message on his memorial stone: “If anyone returns to the South, please take me home.”
