The Nhu Nguyet River defensive line

Ly Thuong Kiet (1019-1105) was an outstanding military commander and statesman of Dai Viet during the Ly dynasty. He served under the reigns of Ly Thai Tong, Ly Thanh Tong, and Ly Nhan Tong, achieved major victories, and came to be honored as one of the dynasty's greatest generals.

In late 1076, as the Song dynasty launched an invasion of Dai Viet, Ly Thuong Kiet established a fortified defensive line along the Nhu Nguyet River and deployed naval forces to prevent the enemy's land and water armies from joining together. Once the Song troops were held back, deprived of supplies, and weakened, he launched a well-timed counterattack. The poem Nam quoc son ha was proclaimed at the front to strengthen the resolve of Dai Viet's soldiers and affirm the nation's sovereignty. Facing defeat, the Song army accepted peace and withdrew.

“The Southern emperor rules the Southern land,
Its borders clearly ordained in Heaven's book.
How dare the invaders trespass upon it?
You shall surely witness your defeat.”
