HƯNG ĐẠO ĐẠI VƯƠNG
Composure before the Yuan envoy
Tran Hung Dao (1228-1300), born Tran Quoc Tuan, was an exceptional military leader and statesman of Dai Viet during the Tran dynasty. As Quoc cong Tiet che, or supreme commander, he led the army and people of Dai Viet to victory over three Mongol-Yuan invasions in 1258, 1285, and 1287. After his death, he was revered by the Vietnamese people as Duc Thanh Tran.
In 1277, the Yuan envoy Sai Thung arrived in Dai Viet with an arrogant manner, harassing local officials and insulting the royal court. Tran Quoc Tuan asked to visit the envoy's residence, shaving his head and wearing the simple robe of a monk. His calm presence compelled Sai Thung to rise and receive him. Even when an attendant jabbed an arrow into his head until it bled, he remained composed and showed no sign of distress, forcing Sai Thung to escort him to the door. His conduct revealed complete command of the moment and a defense of national dignity through intelligence, composure, and pride.
