ỨC TRAI
Messages written on leaves
Nguyen Trai (1380-1442) was a great statesman and cultural figure, as well as one of the key leaders of the Lam Son uprising under Le Loi. He helped defeat the Ming forces, restore Dai Viet's independence, and became one of the founding officials of the Later Le dynasty.
His Binh Ngo sach earned Le Loi's trust, allowing Nguyen Trai to take part in military planning and draft proclamations calling people to support the resistance. According to a popular account, he also proposed writing messages on leaves with animal fat so that ants would eat along the lines, leaving words that spread among the people. The message “Le Loi vi quan, bach tinh vi than” - “Le Loi as ruler, the people as subjects” - affirmed the people's role in the nation's cause. The story captures Nguyen Trai's gift for winning hearts: building trust through justice and transforming that belief into collective strength.
